Memorial to Matthew Shepard dedicated
“The nation - and the city of Laramie - has become more accepting of gays and lesbians in the 10 years since a gay University of Wyoming student was beaten, lashed to a lonely fence and left to die, his mother said Saturday.

“We’ve learned a lot, we’ve talked a lot; we do it in public forums now,” Judy Shepard said at a ceremony dedicating a bench to her son, Matthew Shepard. “So it’s a wonderful tribute to Matt that these kinds of things are discussed.”

Dennis Shepard said he hopes people enjoy the bench, which sits outside the university’s arts and sciences building with potted plants and flowers on either side. A plaque affixed to the bench, paid for by the foundation, reads: “Matthew Wayne Shepard Dec. 1, 1976-Oct. 12, 1998. Beloved son, brother, and friend. He continues to make a difference. Peace be with him and all who sit here.”

“The words that we have written there are heartfelt,” Dennis Shepard said. “Matt would have been the first to say so. And as far as we’re concerned, with the words here, he’s the last to say so.”"

WHEN I was still in school, my male schoolmates and the males of my family would knock on the door of my apartment early in the morning on Easter Monday carrying buckets of water (vedrá s vodou) and wicker whips (prútené korbáče).

Because I knew what was going to happen, I immediately went to hide while my mother opened the door. The boys splashed and whipped my mum while chanting the first line of the famous Slovak Easter saying, “Šibi-ryby, mastné ryby, kus koláča od korbáča (Whips-fishes, greasy fishes, piece of cake from the whip” - it doesn’t make sense in Slovak either!). Then they would start to look for me.

It would never take them too long to find me, because like most girls who live in apartment blocks, my favourite place to hide was the one room that you could lock - the bathroom. After several minutes of persuading me that they would not pour any water on me, I would believe them and open the door. I need hardly add that they did not keep their word.

As soon as I unlocked the door they would pull me out and whip me far more than my mother had been whipped. Then I would end up in the bath, soaking wet.

An Important Petition!

The American Psychiatric Association has formed working committees to revise by 2011 its Diagnostic and Statistic Manual (DSM), the definitive resource on the Diagnostic Criteria for all mental disorders.

Statements currently within the DSM Paraphilias criteria include things such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, SM, and others, that are contradicted by scientific evidence (for example, it says that there are 20 male masochists for every female masochist - and no female sadists, exhibitionists, etc.!). Therefore NCSF concluded that the interpretation of the Paraphilias criteria has been politically – not scientifically – based. This politically motivated interpretation subjects BDSM practitioners, fetishists and cross-dressers to bias, discrimination and social sanctions without any scientific basis. Thus, NCSF is calling on the American Psychiatric Association to remove or drastically restructure the Paraphilias section in the DSM.

To help fight for this, there is a petition that has just been started. It says “We, the undersigned, support the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) own goal of making its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) a scientific document, based on empirical research and devoid of cultural bias. A diagnosis of a mental disorder can have a severe adverse impact on employment opportunities, child custody determinations, an individual’s well-being, and other areas of functioning. Therefore we urge the APA to remove all diagnoses that are not based upon peer-reviewed, empirical research, demonstrating distress or dysfunction, from the DSM. The APA specifically should not promote current social norms or values as a basis for clinical judgments.”

“A routine trip to the Social Security office Monday turned into 30 minutes of shock, disbelief and irritation for Lapriss Gilbert, who was forced to leave the federal building by a guard who objected to her “lesbian.com” T-shirt.

As she headed for a line to pick up a Social Security card for her son, Gilbert was stopped by a guard who said her T-shirt, naming an educational and resource Web site for gay women, was offensive.

She said the guard, who works for a private company hired by the Department of Homeland Security, demanded that she leave the building or face arrest.”

News like the above makes me skeptical of the recent poll stating that the majority of Americans would support an openly gay president. While I would love for this to be true I doubt that’s the case.

I’d like to see an openly gay president, vice president or cabinet memeber in my lifetime.

We Are A Determined CommUNITY

It must be said, Catalina is not donating to NCSF. Catalina is donating on behalf of the CommUNITY who supported us in excess of our needs. The total amount in excess of our needs that we are sending to NCSF immediately is $225.00.

It’s worth noting that in June, when the ridiculous expense account fee that the school tacked on is refunded, we will also be sending those funds to NCSF ($1000).

I’d like to say Thank You again to all those involved - the people who bought tickets, the people who donated prizes, the people who cross posted, and the people who sent us good vibes and well-wishes. It all adds up and it all makes a difference.

Mark and I both will never forget the feeling of support that overwhelmed us. We were moved to tears to see people so willing to donate even just $1 toward the cause. The truly random kindness of strangers has amazed us. The mere fact that people trusted us, that we were telling the truth, and that we would be giving the excess to NCSF means so much to us.

I keep getting emails and calls from friends & strangers alike that are really affirming that I have the best job in the world. They start usually like this;

“FUCK YOU”! or “Add me to the list of guys who want to kill you & take your place” or “Hey, here I am watching the latest update on Hog Tied and what do you know? I KNOW that voice! It’s a friend of mine, I can call you a friend, right? So, I continue to watch & sure as shit…. It is you!” How the FUCK did you get that gig?” When I wrote back to that one I sort of told him I’m the new director & he asked for, of all things, a tour of the Armory!

Yea, I do have the best job in the world and my mother agrees. She has always asked me when my rope “thing” was going to put food on the table. Mom, I am glad to announce that you can finally be proud of me! ;-)

Yes, I was officially offered the webmaster/director’s job @ Kink as the new Director of Hogtied.com. Matt has been promoted to Creative Director of Kink & all of their sites & he has been looking for his replacement. It seems I was on the short list.

So, starting today I will be keeping an account of what it is like to have the dream job of every (public) rigger I have ever met or had in one of my classes. Check out my rigger’s blog @ nawalochai.com

This is a lot to wrap my head around but I am really looking forward to working with such a wonderful crew of people doing what I love doing.

I’m still new to this whole sex blogging thing, but I’ve found that it is a community unlike any other I have been part of. There is a sort of electricity when everyone is like-minded and kinky. Not that we all have the same kinks or the same philosophies or what have you, but the open mindedness is there. Plus there is this ever present reminder of sex in the air. We are all having sex, writing about it, thinking about it. Every conversation is somehow tinged with the erotic. It does make for interesting cups of coffee.

In looking at the sex-blogosphere I see lots of pockets of people. We pool together by age, by kink, by aesthetic or sometimes just by chance. It seems like there are a large number of us in the NYC/Tri-State area. We are all often close enough to meet, we are all often in similar socioeconomic situations. Not to say that the metro-sexbloggers are similar, but we do tend to look at certain things differently than our midwestern siblings, our west coast cousins or our international friends.

In light of this I started a new site called NYCSexBlogs.com. It is basically going to be a big list of NYC/Tri State area bloggers. People who live in New York City, work here or play here. I (hopefully “we” soon) will also profile hot NYC bloggers and list fun activities in the city for us kinksters.

If anyone would like to help, there are two things you can do. First off you can email me any links I have missed (which at this point is A LOT) or email me your ideas for a spotlight feature on a certain NYC blogger, a New York activity or something else this particular audience might be interested in. It’s obvious that I’ve recently encountered issues with people who have deemed my writing as immoral. I have no problems admitting to the world that I am working towards a legitimate career as a sex writer and educator at the same time that I am working as a PR and Marketing consultant to some of the best known writers, photographers, models, and site owners. I have no shame in it. I recently shared my writing with my only family member, who was very supportive of my efforts to run my own business, to write articles as well as erotic fiction, and also as a mother. Being someone I respect as an educated woman with a doctorate in education, as well as as a Mom of three successful children, it meant the world to me to hear her say, “I love you, and I think you’re doing a great job, and your child is proof of it!”

Sometimes people aren’t satisified with sharing their disgust personally with the moral offender. It is in these instances that people who live an alternative lifestyle should know about two very important sites. These are cape-wearing defenders of freedom. I’ve spoken recently about the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, but I wanted to write a separate post discussing both the NCSF and the Sexual Freedom Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom is “a national organization committed to creating a political, legal, and social environment in the United States that advances equal rights of consenting adults who practice forms of alternative sexual expression. NCSF is primarily focused on the rights of consenting adults in the SM-leather-fetish, swing, and polyamory communities, who often face discrimination because of their sexual expression.”

They offer some very practical advice, including how to deal with police officers if they are involved and how to travel with sex toys. In addition, they have a list of Kink-Aware Professionals - “The resource for people who are seeking psychotherapeutic, medical, and legal professionals who are informed about the diversity of consensual, adult sexuality” - who might be able to assist you, should the need arise to defend yourself, your lifestyle, or your family.

The SLFDEF states:

Polyamory, swinging, BDSM and fetishism are among the kinds of practices which may expose people to legal problems. We believe that parents should not lose custody of their children just because of the parents’ lifestyle or variety of sexual expression. We believe that people should not face criminal prosecution for consensual sexual expression among adults. We believe that the government should not interfere with consensual sexual expression among adults. Because we believe these things, we are working to provide:

• Money towards legal and litigation expenses, such as attorney fees and expert witness fees.
• Referrals to attorneys and expert witnesses knowledgeable about alternative sexual expression and willing to take cases dealing with it.
• Public information and education about alternative sexual expression.

Both of these resources are available to our CommUNITY. Hopefully you will never need to call upon them, but they are very responsive and they will come to the rescue when and where they can.

My request to you, specifically, is if you have been lucky enough to avoid legal, career, or custodial issues by living your lives freely, that you consider donating directly to these organizations. I realize that you may have just donated via my raffle, but I’m speaking of the bigger picture.

If you can, when you can, keep these two organizations in mind for your socially conscious checkbooks. I know that Mark and I will both be stronger proponents and advocates for each of these groups as a result of their support and help to our CommUNITY.

I keyed this phrase about a year ago & started using it whenever I spoke or wrote about the people around me with similar interests coming together for similar purposes…

It was officially used for an event I helped organize & taught at called Beyond Leather in 2007.  The first year of this event was wonderful & it epitomized the phrase CommUNITY. Our very own Graydancer was a presenter last year as well. Check out the site & sign up for BL 2008!

I know this is supposed to be blog of my ideas but… I would rather those who see this word & will hopefully use it in their own writing would help me write this entry.  So, please comment below on your ideas on the word and concept  of CommUNITY and the way it is spelled & I will add your comments to the entry daily.
